Lost: Her eldest sibling (and the heir to Azurane's throne) Iva. The same day Riana's journal started showing the writing of people she'd never met, Iva fell down a flight of stairs and broke her neck. ...Unfortunately, now Queen Nalia has only one daughter, making Riana heir to the throne. :D So Riana can expect even MORE assassination attempts on her life! If someone were supersticious, they might even think things had turned out rather conveniently that way...

Nine years ago, a little girl was born to the royal family of Azurane, much to the delight of her parents and older siblings. She was a positively adorable child, and once she had learned to walk she would toddle after one or all of her siblings at every opportunity. Sometimes they would pick her up and carry her off with them, and she would giggle and make unintelligable babyspeak at them.
At age three, there was an attempt on her life. A poison, which the royal doctors were able to find an antidote for.
At age five, an attempt. An arrow, intended for her heart which instead struck her shoulder as she turned.
At age seven, another attempt. A traitorous royal guard with a deadly broadsword swing, which left the girl bedridden for months.
With the opening of a leather-bound notebook used for schooling and writing purposes came the death of Azurane's heir, Iva, and Riana became next in line for the throne.
Her parents worry greatly over all the misfortunes that seem to find their youngest child, as well as the effect they appear to have had on her - particularly her morbid fascination with death. Every two or three years, it seems, another attempt is made on her life.
Thus far, she has been lucky. Incredibly lucky. ...Far too lucky. For the mastermind is much closer than her parents realize, and without Riana, he could easily become the next in line...

Riana is a very odd girl, and that's putting it mildly. She has a tendancy to appear out of nowhere and scare the living daylights out of anybody who happens to be nearby with a rather creepy 'huhuhu' laugh. She loves ghost stories, especially the ones about vengeful spirits, and will often act them out to entertain (or scare witless) her older siblings. She enjoys visiting graveyards, and has a pretty morbid sense of humor - she really is the type to laugh at a funeral, although it would be her usual creepy ghost laugh, which rarely makes things any better.
Despite all of this, however, Riana is very eager to please. She's just not quite very good at discerning the best way to go about doing that yet. The fact that her older siblings are generally amused by everything she says or does has led her to believe that everyone enjoys being scared out of their wits and hearing about horror stories, which doesn't always seem to be the case. Whereas most children her age would be terrified of stories about death, or by the imposing and battle-worn family guards, Riana often goes around and asks about people's brushes with death. The sight of blood just doesn't seem frighten her, nor do the most grotesque descriptions of gore you can imagine.

Riana has long blueish-purple hair and grayish eyes. She tends to wear rather cute outfits, that contrast sharply with her personality. Short and unbearably cute, she may very well be smiling happily while talking about someone getting decapitated. It's probably this sharp contrast in her appearance and personality that really make her actions all the more frightening. Her voice is not quite what you'd expect from a nine-year old - it's of a somewhat lower octave that makes her sound like something out of a ghost story herself. Oftentimes she'll speak in runon sentences, though more for a creepy effect than due to some sort of excitement.

* The journal name danceurmacabre is a play off the title of the illustrations titled La Danse Macabre, meaning "the dance with death." It is considered a late medieval allegory showing that death is universal. The word "danceur" is French for dancer.
* The keywords used for all of Riana's icons are bits of a poem by Henri Cazalis called Danse Macabre on which a musical performance was later based.
* Akuji (Riana's last name) is an African name meaning "dead and awake."
